4th Grade: "Number the Stars"

In this unit, I created literature focused lessons. I chose the book "Number the Stars" by Lois Lowry. I wanted to be able to integrate reading, language arts, and social studies into my unit. This book allowed us to focus on each subject. I used developmentally appropriate material to share the friendship and courageous stories of World War II.
Students spent time researching and exploring the world of World War II. As a class, we discussed these topics and read the book. The students were engaged at every turn of the page. As we built schema for the subject and looked at multiple points of view, I introduced the workings of non-fiction text through a newspaper. As a class, we took the information we had gathered and created a class newspaper using key events in the book and in history. Each student was given a column to write and were graded on relevance of the topic chosen.
Through this project, students were able to work with a partner and use their imaginations. They were able to use what they learned in class and place it in writing.
