Integration! As a future teacher on a time crunch, I know that getting to every subject in a day is like running a marathon. This is the reason, I have embraced integration. During my time with third-grade, I was given the challenge of teaching expository text in reading and adjectives in language arts.
To meet the standards and the needs of my students, I chose to bring in expository text from all areas. I wanted to expose my students to all types of expository text. As a class, we focused on a cookbook. We looked at several and listed all of the text features needed to create such a book. As a class, we created our own class cookbook filled with hundreds of adjectives. As a bonus, we were able to integrate authentic instruction using technology. We used the ReadWriteThink website to create a layout for our recipes and put together our book.
The students really enjoyed these lessons. They were able to to use an everyday item and complete an in-depth study on it using technology and art.
Their final assessment consisted of them having all of the necessary components of a recipe, adjectives describing each food item, and a hand-drawn illustration of the item.
